Sergio Torop, known to his followers as the Jesus of Siberia, is the founder of the Church of the Last Testament. It's one of the largest of the new religions bubbling up in the former USSR, according to the Washington Post.
Alexander Dvorkin, one of Russia's leading exerts on new religions, called Torop a cult leader who is exploiting vulnerable followers. Torop's followers, he said, are idealists who have had difficult adjusting to the freewheeling new world of Russian capitalism. "They think, 'I am more important than you because I am with Jesus. The end of the world will come, and where will you be with your money and big car?' "
